Dr David Gilbert

Having completed his undergraduate training at the University of Otago, New Zealand, gaining a distinction in medicine in his final year, David completed his physician and Gastroenterology training at Royal Prince Alfred, Liverpool and Bankstown Hospitals in Sydney, obtaining his fellowship in 2006. He then spent two years in Edinburgh in the United Kingdom completing a fellowship in Advanced Endoscopy and Inflammatory Bowel Disease with recognised international experts, before returning to Australia in late 2008.

David has worked as a consultant Gastroenterologist on the Central Coast since 2009, electing to live and work outside of Sydney for lifestyle reasons, with visiting medical officer appointments at Gosford and Wyong Hospitals, and previously at Royal North Shore Hospital (2009-2015), where he provided an endoscopic ultrasound service for Central Coast patients before our local service was established. He also works at Gosford Private Hospital and Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospital.

David’s areas of expertise within Gastroenterology include biliary endoscopy, including both ERCP and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), as well as Inflammatory bowel disease. He established an EUS service on the Central Coast in 2016, which is now an integral part of the Gastroenterology department. Other interests include diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. He has a keen interest in teaching and mentoring of students and specialty trainees alike. He has a number of peer-reviewed publications, and often presents at local and national meetings. He regularly examines for the clinical FRACP (physician) examination, and attends both national and international conferences on a regular basis.

David is affiliated with the Gastroenterology Society of Australia (GESA), the American Society of Gastroenterology (ASGE) and the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP). He is the Gastroenterology representative on the Medical Advisory Council at Gosford Private and Tuggerah Lakes Private Hospitals, and is on the Patient Care Review Committee for the same group which ensures maintenance of clinical standards and outcomes for patients. He aims to provide high quality and empathetic care for all patients he sees.

Outside of work David enjoys keeping fit with a variety of sports including mountain biking, football, skiing and running, spending time with family and friends, and the occasional therapeutic glass of wine.
